On Friday afternoon, 23 September 2011, 13:30-18:00h, a bus excursion to Leiden will be organized. To commemorate “100 Years of Superconductivity” we will visit the Leiden Institute of Physics, the Kamerlingh Onnes Building, and Museum Boerhaave where original instruments and historical attributes are at display. You can sign up for the excursion at the registration desk during the conference. We charge 25 euro per person for which we provide bus transportation from the World Forum to Leiden and back, a lunch bag, and the entrance ticket to Museum Boerhaave. For practical reasons we at first limit the party to about 50 people. In case more people want to join we rent a second bus.

Program and Practical Information

13:30h Departure from World Forum by bus. Lunch bags will be handed out.
14:00h Arrival at the Leiden Institute of Physics.
Introduction with slide show about the historic sites to be visited. Old helium liquefier, Lorentz-Zeeman Windows, Wall with Signatures of Famous Physicists started by Ehrenfest.
15:00h Arrival at the Kamerlingh Onnes Building.
This building was named after Kamerlingh Onnes in 1932. It is the place where helium was first liquefied (10 July 1908) and superconductivity was discovered (8 April 1911). We will visit the historic site where his cryogenic laboratory used to be. The Plaques of the IEEE Milestone Award and the one donated by Philips Research were officially unveiled on 8 April 2011. The building now is home to the Law Faculty.
15:45h Arrival at Museum Boerhaave.
You are free to walk around, but the central purpose of our visit is the exhibition “Kwik nagenoeg nul” ([the resistance of] mercury near enough nill), The Discovery of Superconductivity. An exhibition dedicated to the centenary of superconductivity this year. In the Kamerlingh Onnes Hall the first helium liquefier can be seen, the little lead coil from 1912, so the first superconducting coil, and also the original notebook with the historical line “Kwik nagenoeg nul”.
17:00h Free time to stroll through the center of Leiden with many historic buildings, terraces, shops, restaurants. We suggest two possibilities to get back to the World Forum / Den Haag. You can either take the bus we came with, or you can stay in Leiden to enjoy dinner in one of the many excellent restaurants. In that case you have to walk to the station and return to Den Haag by train.
17:30h Bus leaves for the World Forum arriving there at about 18:00h.
